Loog is an Uruguayan company that has developed a line of easy to play and learn guitars. Their flagship product is a smaller-necked three-string electric guitar. Every guitar comes with a companion app that gets kids playing songs on day one.
In early 2020 I was contacted by Loog because they wanted to develop a firm footing in the U.S. education market and liked the work I had done with littleBits. They were hoping I could help map a path into this new area for them.
I partnered with a former co-worker who was a musician and music educator. Together we conducted research to help Loog get a greater understanding of the market and developed product concepts to help them plan for this new phase of their growth.

Want to dive deeper?
Download the full project summaryWe wanted to start by developing a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that exist for music educators. We reviewed large-scale national studies on the state of music education in the country, interviewed teachers, and combed through online forums to collect information on common tools and practices.
We also surveyed the common curriculum requirements, funding sources, and typical buying cycles for schools. This allowed us to tailor product recommendations to available resources and ensure that we develop a product that meets schools’ academic needs.
Below is a sample of some of the takeaways from this research
We distilled our research into several user profiles to help clearly define the needs and opportunities for music educators.
When this research was complete we developed a series of recommendations and high-level product concepts to help them expand into the K-12 education market. We also prioritized the concepts and put them into a high-level roadmap to help Loog plan implementation over the coming year.
